One with Nature: Agroecology, No-Dig Gardening and Agroforestry with Dario Cortese

This weekly course is within β€˜Responsibility for Our Creation’ programme. Whether you join for single week(s) or commit to the full Spring 6-week programme, you'll learn to think freely, feel deeply, and see the world with newfound clarity.

FULL JOURNEY DETAILS

Cultivating Ecosystems: Agroecology, No-Dig Gardening and Agroforestry

Day 1, Gardening with Living Soil (No-Dig)

Theme Moving from seeing soil as "dirt" (inert matter) to "life" (a collaborative community).
Understanding the concept of soil disturbance and learning to understand when it’s ecologically appropriate

The science The Soil Food Web, the Rhizosphere, and the biological logic of No-Till gardening.

The practice
Observation: The Soil Census. A sensory and empirical analysis of soil health (structure, smell, life forms) via sampling and simple tests.
Action: The Lasagna Bed. Building and planting into a regenerative growing space without tilling, using organic mulch.

Day 2: Reading the landscape: Bio-indicators and Water

Theme: Reading the landscape, by observing spontaneous patterns, including weeds, insects and pathogens. Shifting our attitude from "eradicating enemies" to "listening to messengers."

The Science: Bio-indicators, ecological succession, and reading complexity. How "weeds" repair soil imbalances. Understanding the soil-water cycle, the difference between infiltration and runoff, and the "Sponge Effect" of organic matter.

The Practice:

  • Observation: Mapping soil conditions (compaction, pH, moisture) by identifying spontaneous vegetation.
Tracing how water enters, moves through, and leaves the land (identifying erosion lines vs. accumulation zones).

  • Action: Making bio-fertilisers from local resources: Grass LF, Nettle Tea, CalPhos from eggshells and others.

Day 3: Ecosystemic design: Successional Agroforestry

Theme: Recreating our natural habitat, the ecotone or food forest; thus rediscovering our ecological role: not as custodians or managers, but as a beneficial keystone species, part of an intelligent whole.

The Science: Successional Agroforestry (Syntropy), forest stratification, and integrating trees into vegetable systems for resilience.

The Practice:

  • Observation: Stratification Pruning. Managing light and space in a multi-layered system to allow all levels to thrive.

  • Action: Planting the Guild. Establishing a tree surrounded by a support community.
